Desktop client

Method for pros

One of our customers used this method and was nice enough to share it with everyone. We at Hetzner are not liable for any damage or data loss that may occur as a result of this method.

You can configure the domain directly in the corresponding configuration of the desktop client.

  1. First, close the sync client.
  2. Change the instance's address in the sync client's configuration file:
Linux:  ~/.local/share/data/Nextcloud/nextcloud.cfg
Windows: %APPDATA%\Local\Nextcloud\nextcloud.cfg
* Paths may vary depending on the operating system and type of installation you're using.
  1. Restart the sync client.

Standard method

If the above method is a bit too tricky for you, you can also change the domain directly via the sync client in this more conventional way:

  1. Synchronize your existing directories to prevent data loss.
  2. Log out from your user account. To do this, go to Account and click on Remove.

Storage share1 en

  1. Then click on the Remove Connection button to delete the previous connection. Your data will remain unchanged during this step.

  1. Restart the sync client and click on Login.
  2. Now log on to your new domain. The prefix of the domain will not change.

  1. When you reach the login screen, enter your old login data and click on the Log in button. You may also see another screen after this Account access. If so, click on the Grant access button.
  2. Now you can set the folder synchronization as before. Please make sure to check the checkbox to Keep local data. Otherwise your data will be deleted and you will have to download it again.

  1. Now you will be able to access your Storage Share again and it will be synchronized.

Mobile client

  1. Synchronize your existing directories to prevent data loss.
  2. Log out from your user account. To do this, click on Settings; Advanced; Reset App. Answer any security questions with OK.

  1. Restart the sync client and log into the new URL nx*.your-storageshare.de. The prefix of the domain will not change.

  2. Now you will be able to access your Storage Share again and it will be synchronized.

  2. Open the menu by clicking on the icon with three lines on the top left.
  3. At the top, select the profile picture/initials of your user.
  4. Select Manage accounts.

  1. Now go to Add account.

  2. Now enter your new URL https://nx*.your-storageshare.de

How can I change the colors, logos, and names of my Storage Shares?

You can change the colors, logos and names of your Storage Shares to your own design. To change the design, first you need to activate the Theming app. To do this, click on the profile image and then on Apps, and look for the app that's called Theming. Click on Activate. If you are asked for your password, then enter the password for the current user.

Once you have installed this app, you can find it by going to the profile image and then to Settings; Design. You'll see options for how you can change the Storage Share design. You can, for example, change your background color, your logo, and your background image. In addition, you can adjust small details, such as the logo for the header and the logo for the home button. You can also add a data protection policy statement and legal/contact information for your organization.

Can I use Storage Share with my smartphone?

Yes, there is a Nextcloud app for iOS and Android which is also compatible for Storage Share. You can download the apps from the following links.

After starting the app of your choice, enter your domain. Then log in with your Hetzner Storage Share user details.

How do we keep your data secure with Hetzner Storage Share?

We handle the security for your Storage Share in the same way as with our Storage Boxes. The Storage Share file system can tolerate several simultaneous drive failures. As soon as we detect any irregularities with our drives, we will exchange them immediately, thereby further decreasing the chance of failure to a very low level.

In addition, our Storage Share file system checks the integrity of the data using checksums and automatically corrects errors. We've created a high-availability cluster for the instance databases, making the chances of a complete failure very minimal. Finally, if you choose to synchronize your Storage Share data with your own computer or device using client software, you will have an additional copy of your data.

How are updates rolled out?

We at Hetzner Online will carry out updates automatically as soon as we have thoroughly tested them. You as the customer will not need to perform any updates. You will see notices from Nextcloud about updates, but you can ignore these. You will not be able to perform the updates. Our team will do that for you.

What changes are done to the Nextcloud Software from Hetzners side?

For security and compatibility reasons, we have made the following changes to Nextcloud:

  • Removal of "External storage support" app

    The app allows the option to set incorrect mountpoints which could destroy the instance. Access to other client data is with the app not possible.

  • Changing the App "Monitoring"

    For compatibility reasons we have patched the App "Monitoring". Now it works correctly with our instances and PHP 8. Because of this, some metrics were emptied by us. The empty metrics are still available in the offical Monitoring App due to compatibility reasons.   • Default blocking of user profiles routes from version 23.0.2

    Starting with Nextcloud version 23, profile pages for users have been implemented. These profile pages can normally be accessed via a public URL (https://<Storage Share Domain>/u/<username>).However, since these pages are enabled in the default configuration for every user and share user data such as name and profile picture publicly, we have decided to block the URL by default on our systems.

    Of course, we do not want to withhold the feature from you. If you would like to have it enabled, please open a support request from your KonsoleH Account. Please note that it is currently not possible to change the standard settings for all users.

What is the update strategy for storage shares?

  • Minorreleases are tested and provided by us in a timely manner.
  • When new majorreleases are released, we wait until they are made available in the Nextcloud stable-channel. This usually happens when the first minorrelease after the majorrelease is released.
  • As soon as a Upgrade for all instances is planned we will inform all clients accordingly on Hetzner Status. If you are subscribed to the Status Updates for Storage Shares you will also receive an email.

Will it be possible to create snapshots of the Storage Share instance, including the data on it?

A snapshot function is currently not available.

Is it possible to access the data stored in Storage Share via SFTP or FTPS?

No, it is not possible to access data on your Storage Share via SFTP or FTPS.

How do you prevent one user from accessing another user's Storage Share data?

The individual instances are isolated from each other using a container-based solution.

What does the unlimited storage quota setting mean?

An administrator can create users and limit their storage size. So you, as an administrator, can set up storage space for your users that are, for example 5, 10, 50, or 100 GB. Or you can set up an unlimited sized space. However, this unlimited space will actually be limited by the overall storage size of the Storage Share instance that you (the admin) have bought.

Can domains other than nx*.your-storageshare.de be used?

Yes, if you have an NX11 or higher, you can activate a subdomain on your konsoleH account.

What you need first:

  • a NX11 or higher
  • a domain where you have access to the DNS management. (You need to be able to add CNAME entries yourself.)

Note: If you use konsoleH or Hetzner's DNS Console for the DNS management for your domain, then you have access to the DNS management.

Limitation:

  • It's only possible to customize subdomains, not main domains. (For example, you can use cloud.example.de). You can only use a main domain with a workaround. (See here.)
  • You can't use your own SSL certificates. The interface konsoleH will automatically request and verify your SSL certificate via Let's Encrypt.

Adding a subdomain in the DNS

Twenty-four hours in advance, you should add a CNAME entry for your subdomain on your DNS Console account, konsoleH, or using another DNS management service. (For example for: cloud.example.de):

On Hetzner's DNS Console

  1. Log onto DNS Console.
  2. Choose the domain for your Storage Share that you want to add a subdomain for. In our example, that is example.de .
  3. Fill in the Create record form using the following details:
- Type: CNAME
- Name: cloud (first part of the subdomain)
- Value: nx*.your-storageshare.de. (Make sure to add the . at the end)
- TTL: You can use the default here. You don't need to change it.

When you are done, click on Add record.

On konsoleH

  1. Log onto konsoleH.
  2. Choose the domain for your Storage Share that you want to add a subdomain for. In our example, that is example.de .
  3. On the left, click on the following menu tabs Settings; Configuration; DNS Management.
  4. Then click on the button Add record and fill in the form using the following details:
- Host name: cloud (first part of the subdomain)
- Record type: CNAME
- Target: nx*.your-storageshare.de. (Make sure to add the . at the end)
- TTL: You can leave this blank.

Other DNS management service

Add the appropriate CNAME entry using the following details:

cloud.example.de. IN CNAME nx*.your-storageshare.de.

Note for Cloudflare users: If you happen to use Cloudflare to manage your DNS entries, make sure to switch off the Cloudflare proxy for the corresponding subdomain.

Actually add the subdomain to your Storage Share instance

Now that you have taken care of the other steps, you can actually add the subdomain to your Storage Share account:

  1. Log onto konsoleH.
  2. Choose the correct Storage Share instance.
  3. On the left, click on the following menu tabs: Settings; Configuration; Subdomains.
  4. Enter the complete subdomain that you want to add (for example cloud.example.de). Then click on Add.
  5. konsoleH will automatically start the process for adding the subdomain. You can use the domain as soon as it has the status Active.

Workaround for main domains

There is a workaround that will let you use your main domain. First, create a CNAME record for www.example.de and point it to your Storage Share. Then set up a redirect from example.de to www.example.de in your web hosting account or on your own server. Note: You may need to set up an SSL certificate for example.de.

On konsoleH

If you manage your domain using konsoleH, you can follow the guide below. First, follow the both sets of instructions below for www.example.de:

  1. Add a subdomain in the DNS (Important note: Make sure to first delete the A record for the hostname www from your DNS management interface.)
  2. Actually add the subdomain to your Storage Share instance.

Setting up the redirect:

  1. Log onto konsoleH.
  2. Choose the correct main domain.
  3. On the left, click on the following menu tabs Services; Settings; Server Configuration.
  4. Next to the main folder that your domain points to (by default: public_html), click on the configuration icon for .htaccess.
  5. Using the Redirects button, you can set up the redirect for your domain and then save it by using the Add button.
Type: permanent
Target URL: https://www.example.de

Setting up the SSL certificate:

  1. To set up the SSL certificate for the main domain, go to Services; Extras; SSL Manager and then click on New Certificate.
  2. Select the SSL provider that you prefer, and then request a certificate for the main domain (not *.example.de). Then remove the checkmark next to Include www subdomain entry.

Troubleshooting

Error Error in DNS entry

The DNS entry for your subdomain is not (yet) resolving correctly. Please double check your DNS entries for this subdomain. Double check that there is a . at the end of the entries. If all the entries are correct, wait 24 hours. If, after 24 hours, your domain still does not have the status "Active", please contact our support team.

Error SSL validation error

This means that an error occurred during the process for issuing or renewing the SSL certificate. Please double check the DNS entries for your domain. If the error is still occurring 24 hours later, please contact our support team.

The subdomain no longer is working and/or has disappeared from konsoleH

If the initial setup or renewal of the SSL certificate fails, even after several attempts over several days, it will be automatically removed from our system and from your Storage Share account. You can re-add the subdomain at any time once you have correctly reconfigured it.

Will the Storage Share also be offered at other locations?

Our team is carefully considering if we will be able to offer other data center locations in the future.

Is it possible to upgrade/downgrade my account? Do I have to migrate my data?

Yes, you can upgrade to a larger account size and you do not need to migrate your data to do this. If you want to downgrade your account, this is also do-able, but you need to make sure your data is under the limit for the smaller plan that you would like. Otherwise, the downgrade will not work. Also, with an account downgrade, you do not need to migrate the data yourself.

To upgrade/downgrade your account, log into konsoleH. Then go to the correct Storage Share. In the navigation next to Account Type you should see a pencil icon. Click directly on the pencil. You can then change the size by going to New Account Type and choosing the size you want.

Can the feature xyz be added?

Unfortunately, we at Hetzner Online cannot add any features to Storage Share since we have not developed this software ourselves. However, you can make a feature request by going to the official Github repository: https://github.com/nextcloud/server/

Can I migrate from an old Storage Share to a new Storage Share line?

Yes, it is possible to upgrade to the new Storage Share products.

Do I have to transfer data manually?

No, you do not have to transfer your data. All data is retained.

Will there be any downtime?

No, the upgrade takes place without downtime.

How can I create backups?

A backup is performed automatically several times a day. It is currently not possible for you to manually perform a backup.

How can I restore backups?

If the backup is successfully completed, you can restore it via your account on the konsoleH web interface. If you have trouble restoring a backup, please contact our support team.

Where are the backups saved?

The backup is always made to another host machine on which the instance is not running.

Is the Storage Share still accessible while the restore is running?

No, the Storage Share is not available as long as the restore is running. (This may take up to 1-2 days depending on the backup size). As soon as the restore is finished, you will receive an email.
