What are Hetzner Cloud Placement Groups?
Placement Groups allow you to influence the distribution of virtual servers in our data centers. The distribution of the different instances within a group is based on a pattern specified in the type. We currently offer one type, which is Spread. With this type, all virtual servers will be running on different physical servers.
What about existing servers?
It is possible to add existing servers but they have to be offline in order to be added to a Placement Group. After they have been added, servers can be used as before.
What about other resources?
So far, our Placement Groups do not support any other resources than servers. This means that it is not possible to add features such as Volumes or Load Balancers to Placement Groups in order to spread them over multiple storage pools or clusters.
Are Placement Groups location bound?
No, instances within the same Placement Group do not have to be from the same location. This means that one Placement Group can include servers from Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, Ashburn, VA, Hillsboro, OR, and / or Singapore.
Are Placement Groups moveable?
No, it is not possible to move Placement Groups to another project. Servers within a Placement Group cannot be moved either. In order to move a server to another project, you will first have to remove it from the Placement Group. This does not mean that servers will end up on the same host upon moving. In other words, nothing will be put on the same physical server instantly by disabling the grouping.
Who can make changes to Placement Groups?
All restricted users and users with role above have permission to make changes to Placement Groups (add / remove groups, add / remove servers from groups).
