Live migration
Each cloud server runs on a physical server. In the scenarios listed below, a physical server may become unavailable. To keep cloud servers running, our systems perform a live migration from the affected physical server to another physical server within the same location.
- On your cloud server, live migration usually causes a disruption of less than 1 second.
- All cloud server properties (IP addresses, network settings, ...) remain the same.
- If a Volume is attached to your cloud server, the Volume is automatically migrated with the cloud server.
Scenarios for live migration:
-
Maintenance on the physical server
For example hardware, network, BIOS or operating system maintenance. To ensure reliable performance, we regularly perform planned maintenace on our physical servers. -
System updates and changes on the physical server
For example installing security updates or changing the size of the root partition. -
Hardware failure on the physical server
For example disk, CPU, or memory failure. If live migration is not possible because of hardware falure, the cloud server shuts off and automatically restarts on a different physical server within the same location.
For more information about the live migration process itself, see "Replication stages during live migration".
