Add a new DNS zone

  1. Click the Add new zone button on your dashboard.
  2. In the Your DNS zone section, type the domain that you want to create a new DNS zone for, for example, domain-example.com.
  3. Choose a method for adding records:
    • Add records (recommended)
      • You can turn off the auto scanning function by using the switch. If you do so, we only create your zone. In the next step, you can add records manually.
    • Import zone file
    • Secondary (advanced)
  4. Click the Continue button. This should lead you directly to the Manage zone page:
  5. Add records: You can choose between importing records automatically or creating them manually.
  6. Add records (auto scanning off): You can create new records.
  7. Import zone file: Click the Import file button to import an existing BIND file.
  8. Secondary: Add a primary server.
  9. It may happen that the same zone has already been created by another person. If this is the case, you will be asked to create a TXT record at your legacy DNS provider to prove that you are the legal owner of the zone.
  10. After you have successfully set the TXT record, click the Continue button; this will lead you directly to the Manage records page.

Create and delete DNS records

Create a DNS record

  1. Select a record type (Supported DNS record types) in the Create record section.
  2. Fill in the fields required by the specific record type (See How to manage DNS records for detailed instructions).
  3. Click the Add record button.
  4. After you have added all the records, click the Continue button. This will lead you directly to the Verify ownership page.

Delete a DNS record

  1. Click the Delete button of the respective DNS record in the right column of the list.
  2. Confirm the deletion.

These records will not take effect until you have updated your name servers with your legacy DNS provider and those changes have propagated. This can take up to 48 hours.

Change name servers with your legacy DNS provider

In order to administer your DNS entries using the Hetzner DNS Console, you’ll need to point to the Hetzner Online name servers from your legacy DNS provider. This is different for every DNS provider. The order of the name servers is important. Make sure to change and remove the correct name servers.

After you have done this, click the Finished, go to dashboard button.

Delete a DNS zone

  1. To delete a DNS zone, choose the zone you want to delete either from the dashboard or the dropdown menu in the top navigation bar.
  2. Click the Settings button in the top menu.
  3. Click the Delete zone button.
  4. Confirm the deletion by entering the zone name, and click the Delete zone button.
