Sustainability and energy-efficient IT infrastructure are integral parts of our corporate strategy. This article provides an overview of our energy and environmental standards, our electricity consumption, and our sustainability reporting.

Energy and environmental management

EMAS / ISO 14001

Our German locations have EMAS certification. EMAS, which stands for “Eco-Management and Audit Scheme”, is a voluntary EU standard for environmental management. EMAS provides a framework for checking on the environmental practices of companies, including their management systems, transparent communications, and performance metrics. One goal of EMAS is for participating companies to continuously asses and improve their efforts.
By earning EMAS certification, we at Hetzner officially commit ourselves to regularly checking on our progress, making measurable improvements, and publishing transparent reports about what we have achieved. Our participation in EMAS demonstrates our dedication to reducing our environmental footprint and to making our services as sustainable as possible.

Climate protection and energy supply

Hetzner is not yet completely climate neutral. A key component of our climate protection strategy is the procurement of electricity from renewable energy sources.

  • In Germany, we obtain 100 percent of our electricity from hydropower.
  • Compared to the average German electricity mix, we reduce annual CO2 emissions at our German locations by around 77,000 tons of CO2.

In addition to the choice of energy source, the efficiency of our data centers plays a central role. With an average PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) value of 1.13, we operate our data centers in an extremely energy-efficient manner, thereby further reducing the energy requirement per IT service provided.

Sustainability reporting and CSRD

Hetzner is subject to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). We will publish a comprehensive sustainability report for the 2025 financial year.

The report will be prepared in accordance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standard (ESRS) and will cover all material sustainability topics, including:

  • Environment and climate
  • Social aspects and employees
  • Corporate governance and compliance

As soon as the sustainability report is available, we will link to it on our [sustainability page] and make it available for download there.
