Caution: Settings for a directory also apply to all of its subdirectories!
Directory protection
With this function, you can make access to particular directories password-protected. In this way, only people who you choose can have access to sensitive information.
How to protect a directory with a password:
- Select the directory that you wish to protect with a password from the directory list, and click on the password protection symbol.
- If the directory is currently not protected, the following message appears: «No user available. Select 'Add' to protect this directory». If users already exist, you will see the user list. You can also 'Edit' or 'Delete' the access details for existing users.
- To create a new user, click on 'Add user'. Enter the username, the password (click on 'Generate password' to create a random password), and a description of the password-protected area. (This description is shown during login. Therefore, we recommend that you use a clear name in the description, or that you use the name of the directory in this description.)
- Click on 'Save'.
- If you click on 'Back', you will return to the directory list. There, you can add more users or make changes.
Redirects function
With this function, you can manage redirects to external websites. To set up a new redirect, follow these steps:
- Select which type of redirect you would like to set up. This is only important for search engines.
The available types are: * permanent: The destination is permanently located at the new address. * temp: The destination is temporarily located at the new address. * seeother: The destination is completely replaced by the new address.
- Select the destination URL. Provide a complete website address, such as http://www.example.de/
- Click on 'Add'.
As soon as a visitor calls up the selected webpage directory in the browser, they will be redirected to the new website. To change the redirect, click on 'Edit' in the list of available aliases. To remove the redirect function, click on 'Delete'.
IP blocker
If you wish to block an IP address, host name, or IP domain from your website, you can use the IP blocker:
- an IP address: e.g. 192.168.0.3
- an IP address range: e.g. 192.168.0
- a domain (without www): e.g. example.de
You can also edit and delete blocked IP addresses.
Your own error pages
In this area, you can enter your own error pages which users will see if a certain error occurs. Common types of error include:
- 401 Unauthorized: This error is triggered if a password-protected area is accessed without correct access details. Important note: You can only save a file here; you cannot save a URL here!
- 403 Forbidden: This error is triggered if a document or directory is called up without the necessary permission.
- 500 Internal Server Error: This error is triggered if an unexpected server error occurs. This happens, for example, if scripts require too many resources or if there are errors in .htaccess files.
Homepage
Here you can establish the order in which the server looks for homepages that visitors will see once visitors call up a corresponding directory. Enter a list of file names. Make sure to separate each file with a space (e.g. index'index.html index.php indexhtm'). If you leave the list empty, the default server setting is used. If there is no suitable file in the directory, either a 403 Error will occur (see above), or a list of all files available in the directory will appear. What is shown to visitors in both situations depends on the 'Directory index' setting.
Directory index
You can decide whether visitors who call up a directory without an appropriate homepage can see the content of the directory via the browser or not. For security reasons, we recommend that you disable this feature.
