Software updates

Last change on 2026-07-09 • Created on 2024-02-14 • ID: MA-14325

This information page summarises the changes resulting from the software updates that we have carried out over the years on all web hosting accounts and managed servers.

Software updates 2026

The version of all PostgreSQL databases will increase from 15 to 17 during the update.

At the same time, all MariaDB databases will receive an update from version 10.11 to 11.8.

MariaDB versions 10.11 and 11.8 are almost fully compatible; hence in nearly all cases, you normally do not need to make modifications or adaptations to your databases or database-related code. Changes in behavior may occur for transactions executed under the Repeatable Read isolation level, see MariaDB documentation

You should check in advance whether your applications are compatible with the above database versions. This is usually the case.

Other software updates include the following products:

Package Old New
Apache 2.4.57 2.4.67
Git 2.39 2.47
Perl 5.36 5.40
Python3 3.11.2 3.13.5
PostgreSQL 15 17
MySQL/MariaDB 10.11 11.8
Java (OpenJDK) 17 25

Additional changes

Web server PHP integration via FPM

PHP integration will be switched from FCGI to FCGI-FPM (FPM = FastCGI Process Manager) on all hosting servers. This will not affect the performance of your website(s). At the same time, the memory usage of your PHP processes will be reduced.

HTTP/3 support

The Apache web server currently in use is being supplemented by NGINX on all hosting servers. Among other things, this enables HTTP/3 support on your website(s) (previously only HTTP/1.x and HTTP/2 were supported).

Support for post-quantum cryptography for TLS-connections

TLS connections now support the X25519MLKEM768 key exchange algorithm, enabling so-called post-quantum cryptography (cryptography resistant to quantum computer attacks).

Support for Plus Addressing (Subaddressing)

Email accounts now support plus addressing. This means that a mailbox can be used as the destination address via subaddresses in the format emailaccount+subaddress@domain.de. Emails sent to such an address will be delivered to the mailbox of emailaccount@domain.de.

Note: This may lead to unexpected behavior if you are currently using a catch-all mailbox and expect emails in the format emailaccount+subaddress@domain.de to be delivered there. These emails will now be delivered directly to the mailbox of emailaccount@domain.de.

FAQ

When will I be notified about my server's update date?

We will normally notify you six weeks in advance once your server has been scheduled for a regular software update.

I need the software update sooner. Can I bring the update date forward?

Yes, in most cases, we can bring your update date forward. Please submit an authorized support request via konsoleH and let us know your preferred date. We generally need around one week's notice to reschedule the update to an earlier date.

Note: The update date cannot be postponed.

Software updates 2024

The version of all PostgreSQL databases will increase from 13 to 15 during the update.

At the same time, all MariaDB databases will receive an update from version 10.5 to 10.11.

MariaDB versions 10.5 and 10.11 are almost fully compatible; hence in nearly all cases, you normally do not need to make modifications or adaptations to your databases or database-related code. If you use the OFFSET identifier (for example, for table names, indexes, views, etc.), it might be necessary to quote the identifier in your SQL queries from now on, see MariaDB documentation

You should check in advance whether your applications are compatible with the above database versions. This is usually the case.

Other software updates include the following products:

Package Old New
Apache 2.4.56 2.4.57
Git 2.30 2.39
Perl 5.32 5.36
Python3 3.9.2 3.11.2
PostgreSQL 13 15
MySQL/MariaDB 10.5 10.11
Java (OpenJDK) 11 17

Additional changes

Discontinued support for Python 2

Support for Python 2 applications is going to be discontinued. If you are running software which is not yet Python3 compatible, you may need to make modifications.

OpenSSL 3

The TLS library OpenSSL will receive an update from version 1.1 to 3.0. These versions are partially incompatible. If you run your own software utilizing OpenSSL, it should be modified as necessary and rebuilt/recompiled for OpenSSL 3.0.

Software updates 2022

Please note that the version of all PostgreSQL databases will increase from 11 to 13 during the update.

MySQL is going to be replaced by MariaDB, which will result in a database version change from 5.7 (MySQL) to 10.5 (MariaDB). MySQL and MariaDB are almost fully compatible; hence in nearly all cases, you normally do not need to make modifications or adaptations to your databases or database-related code.

If your databases are affected, you should nevertheless make sure that your applications are compatible with these versions. They usually are.

Other software updates include the following products:

Package Old New
Apache 2.4.38 2.4.51
Git 2.20 2.30
Perl 5.28 5.32
Python3 3.7.3 3.9.2
PostgreSQL 11 13
MySQL/MariaDB 5.7 10.5

Discontinued support for Python 2

Support for Python 2 applications is going to be discontinued. If you are running software which is not yet Python3 compatible, you may need to make modifications.

TLS 1.2/1.3 as minimum default

The minimum default version for TLS connections is going to be raised to 1.2, which means that direct connections to services like FTPS/IMAPS/POP3S will only be possible via secure TLS protocol versions 1.2 and 1.3. Unencrypted connections will be disabled by default. However, on managed servers, customers can write a support request and ask to change/lower this to the older and potentially insecure versions 1.0 and 1.1 or allow unencrypted connections again. As always, customers can choose the TLS version they prefer for HTTPS connections via konsoleH; this option will not be affected by this change.

Software updates 2019/2020

Please note that the version of all PostgreSQL databases will increase from 9.6 to 11 during the update. The MySQL server version will remain unchanged (5.7).

If your databases are affected, you should check beforehand whether your applications are compatible with these versions. They usually are compatible.

Other software updates include the following products:

Package Old New
Apache 2.4.25 2.4.38
Git 2.11 2.20
Perl 5.24 5.28
Python2 2.7.13 2.7.16
Python3 3.5.3 3.7.3
PostgreSQL 9.6 11
Java OpenJDK 8 11

Additional changes

Dovecot replaces Courier

⋅⋅⋅Dovecot will replace the POP3 and IMAP service Courier. The advantages of this change are better performance and reliability.

TLS 1.3

⋅⋅⋅TLS 1.3 will be supported for encrypted connections after the update to Debian 10/Buster. TLS 1.3 offers faster connection establishment, better security and improved performance over TLS versions "1.0"-"1.2".

OpenSSL 1.0

⋅⋅⋅OpenSSL 1.0 will no longer be supported. Instead OpenSSL 1.1 will be used. If you have software that uses OpenSSL 1.0, it may have to be adapted and recompiled. If your software uses OpenSSL 1.0, please check for necessary changes.

mod_brotli

⋅⋅⋅After the update, our systems will provide support for mod_brotli. You will be able to activate this function via konsoleH.
